How to get there:- From East: A69 from Newcastle for 30 miles, past Hexham turn left before Haydon Bridge. From West: A69 from Carlisle for 40 miles, through Haydon Bridge, turn right follow the road for 2 miles. A very impressive building. Probably the finest tower-house in Northumberland. NY 835625/Hotel/Access Tower house built circa 1350. A later C14 forebuilding is set in the re-entrant angle of the south east tower and the east face. A four storey central block with five storey angle towers projecting from the east and west faces. In ruins by 1541 there had been a fire in 1405 when its interior was gutted. During the 17th Century the estates became the property of the Earls of Derwentwater, Vicounts Langley. James the third Earl and Charles his brother, took part in the Jacobite risings of 1715 the pair were subsequently executed at the Tower of London. It was restored in the 1890's by antiquarian Cadwallader Bates this work continued after his death by his wife Josephine. It became a barracks in WWII, then St Cuthbert's school for girls and is currently an hotel. Probably the finest tower-house in Northumberland, Langley Castle is thought to have been built by Sir Thomas de Lucy and later belonged to the Earl of Northumberland. It was already a roofless ruin in 1541 but remained a tolerably intact shell until Bates' restoration. |
