Hadrian's Wall - Walltown
The line of the Roman Wall built by the Emperor Hadrian in AD 122-3 runs coast to coast. These images are from the stretch north of Haltwhistle. There is no town of Walltown but the farmhouse here bears the name. This is the site of Turret 44b, Haltwhistle, Northumberland.
The owners of Walltown Quarry had no regard for the history on the ridge above their workings. The Wall is severed at this point , Haltwhistle, Northumberland.
The Walltown Quarry site abandoned. Hadrian's Wall continues on the far ridge, Haltwhistle, Northumberland.
Thankfully some of the most spectacular remains are to be found west of the Walltown Quarry, Haltwhistle, Northumberland.
The Wall builders wrapped their project around the huge boulders on the ridge top, Waltown, Haltwhistle, Northumberland.
Looking to the East and the Sewingshield and Highshield Crags .This farm is called Greatchesters after the modern name of the Roman Wall fort (AESICA). In 1724 a visitor reported that the Fort Hall as still standing to a hight of nearly 13 feet.(3.96M) ,The field wall in the foreground sits on the foundations of Hadrian's Wall, Haltwhistle, Northumberland.
