Northumberland's Castles

A Welsh Castle
Newport (Pembs)
The "Hoppings" on the Town Moor is the the largest travelling fair in Europe. Held each year to coincide with "Race Week" in late June at Newcastle racecourse where the running of the "Northumberland Plate" is the highlight. It has a local reputation as a week in which it always rains turning the Hoppings into a quagmire. This year however it was sunshine all the way. The rides and shows are from the traditional, shown here, to the latest fast and scary rides. With Hoopla and other stalls by the hundred. Newcastle upon Tyne.

Housesteads Fort & Milecastle 37
Housesteads Roman Fort lies on the line of Hadrian's Wall 20 miles west of Newcastle upon Tyne. The finest example of a Roman fort to be found in Britain. It is easily accessible from the carpark on the B6318 (Military Road), Northumberland.

The site of Milecastle 37 a few hundred yards west of Housesteads Roman Fort, Northumberland
The north gateway of Milecastle 37. This Milecastle sits at the top of a cliff and was unlikely to have been of value to vehicle traffic when it was built around AD124, The tactical value of a Milecastle here is a puzzle and its site would seem to have been determined by a military plan that laid down that there would be a Milecastle every mile. A Roman mile was 1620 Yards, Housesteads, Northumberland
