Akeld Bastle, was first mentioned in 1522, it is described as "the lytle fortlett or castle house without a barmkin" in the border survey of 1541 when Lord Dacre wrote to Cardinal Wolsey suggesting that ten men be placed there under the command of John Wallis for the defence of the border. The Wallis family later built Coupland castle nearby. Northumberland
